From Talk to Power: ASCO Generates Its Own Power with Sun and Wind in Farsund

Logistics giant ASCO wanted to do more than just talk about the green transition. They built their own hybrid system with wind and solar at Farsund harbour. Now, they're charging electric trucks, heating warehouses, and cutting costs with their own power.

At their logistics base in Farsund harbour, ASCO already had a 300-square-meter solar park. But they wanted to accomplish more.

Now, they have installed two vertical wind turbines, 3,7 kilowatts each. The technology is connected with the solar park in one integrated system. Norhybrid is the company behind the hybrid technology that makes this solution possible.

This means ASCO gets power from the sun in the summer and from the wind in the winter.

"We've been working on this project for ASCO for three years," says Tom Egil Ravndal, Port Manager at ASCO. "The problem was that the technology wasn't ready. Now it is - so we got started."

The hybrid solution provides year-round energy – without straining the power grid

Solar provides good output in the summer but loses power when we need it most. With wind turbines, it's the complete opposite. They perform best during the winter months and can also generate power at night and other times when the sun isn't shining.

"That's the whole point of a hybrid solution," says Trond Sørensen from Norhybrid, adding that the goal is to combine the strengths of both solar and wind power. The end result is that ASCO secures renewable energy all year round.

"You get great output from the sun in the summer, but when the wind and cold take over, it's the wind power that keeps things running," says Trond, adding: "It's simply great engineering."

Close Collaboration Made the Project Possible

Norhybrid handled the technology and installation of the wind turbines in close collaboration with Elmec and Einar Øgrey Farsund.

The hybrid solution provides power for everything from lighting and heating to charging electric trucks and running the warehouses.

"This has been an incredibly good project," says Jon Arild Skeibrok from Elmec. "We've worked closely with both Norhybrid and ASCO and connected to the solar power system they already had. Now the turbines are up, and we're making the final connections."

"It might look simple," he says, pointing to the two turbines, "but it's an advanced technological solution that's now in place in Farsund."
